Hoy Familia!
I am starting week number 7. Just 17 days and I leave for Porto Alegre! Crazy! So much has been happening! I have been released as district leader and called as the new assistant to the president. Now all of the district leaders report to me and i report directly to the Branch president. I make assignments for who blesses and passes the sacrament, who says prayers, who plays piano and conducts the music, all sorts of fun stuff. Elder carpenter took over my position as district leader. At night I walk down the hall and have to give everyone a ten minute warning and tell them when its lights out.
We got to go proselyting this past Friday. It was awesome. Elder Barker and I approached a group of men eating lunch and asked them how they were doing and what they were eating. We began to talk to them about the book of mormon and after explaining anything we asked him if he would like the book. I then read him Moroni 10:4-5 and told him that if he read it he would be blessed and he could pray to know of its truthfulness. He accepted the book of mormon and thanked us.
We continued to walk around but our whole district was assigned to a small area and everywhere we looked our district was talking to someone. We walked up to a mechanic shop of some sort and there was a man standing outside. We began to talk to him and he explained that he was already taking discussions from the missionaries and then he testified to us that the book of mormon is true and that joseph smith was a prophet. He told us that everyone needs this book. We talked to him for a little bit longer and then continued our search for someone who wanted to hear our message. Each person was only given one book of mormon so in each companionship there were two books to be placed. We walked up to a gas station and saw a group of men in uniform that weren't doing anything so we figured we could talk to them. They all of the sudden had work to do and pinned it on a young man that looked about our age. We approached him and shared our message with him. occasionally one of his friends would come up and listen, nod his head, and then walk away. We gave him the book of mormon and he said that he didn't want to pay for it. I told him that it was free and that he should read it and pray about it.
Walking away we met up with Elder Bowerman and Elder DeMille. They had brought an extra book and were looking to place it. I don't know who came up with this "clever" Idea but someone suggested that we sing a hymn as a quartet to get someone's attention and then talk to them about the book. We walked over to a park and saw what we thought was a nice old man sitting on a bench deep in thought. We practiced singing once off to the side and then walked up to him and asked him if we could sing him a song. He said, to put it kindly, no. We started to share our message with him which was not the orginal plan. Four missionaries trying to teach this one old man. Our teacher even walked up and started to help us preach to him. After awhile of what I could tell was arguing between him and our teacher, she got up to go talk to someone else. This left us with the man who clearly didn't agree with our message. I told him that I love the book of Mormon and I know its words are true. I told him that he could know if what we said was true if he prayed. I then read him Moroni just like I had for the other man. After I finished he began to argue with us a little bit more and Elder Barker took over. He tried to explain the trinity. I feel that he did a pretty good job considering that we don't know the word for trinity or godhead in portuguese. haha. anyway he told us that he doesn't believe in the bible and feels that it is missing something. We tried to explain to him how that is why we have the book of mormon but he wouldn't listen. He believes in reincarnation and he told us that Adam and Eve could not have had any kids because they had two sons, was was cursed and the other was killed. After awhile two brazilian missionaries saw us struggling to explain in portuguese. They walked over and began to talk to him. Six missionaries were standing in front of this guy trying to talk to him! We walked away and let the brazilians take care of it.
So that is my proselyting experience. It was pretty funny. The computers here are incredibly slow, otherwise I would attach some photos for you.
I love you guys!
